EU Report Finds Brazil Unable to Guarantee Standards on Meat Exports

IFA President Joe Healy said the latest EU FVO (Food and Veterinary Office) report covering the "Weak Flesh" meat scandal and corruption in Brazil confirms that the Brazilian authorities seriously misled the EU Commission, and cannot guarantee European consumers that meat products exported to the EU have been produced in accordance with EU requirements. MrHealy said this latest EU report completely undermines any credibility to the arguments being made in the Mercosur trade negotiations that Brazil will ever meet EU production standards on beef and other meat imports. Belarusian dairy and meat products are of high quality, Raimund Jehle, FAO Regional Strategic Programmes Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia, told the media on 14 September. "When I was in Belarus in June I made sure that dairy and meat products and cheese are of supreme quality. This creates a good basis for export development," Raimund Jehle said. Dr Andrii Zhuk, First Deputy Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer production, has reported an outbreak of African swine fever at a farm in Poltava. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reports that the outbreak was first noticed on 31 August and confirmed on 1 September after apolymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was carried out at theState Scientific and Research Institute on Laboratory Diagnosis and Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise.
