ECA criticise Rural Development spending

  • 16 Nov 08:29

A new process for planning EU rural development spending is too long and complex, with shortcomings that hinder both performance and results, according to a report from the European Court of Auditors. EU rural development policy aims to make agriculture more competitive, ensure the sustainable management of natural resources and achieve balanced development of rural economies and communities. The EU plans to spend nearly €100 billion on rural development over the period 2014 to 2020. The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development provides financial support for measures carried out by the Member States through national or regional Rural Development. Read more...

World Pork Expo: Hog Slat Launches Upgraded Fan

  • 15 Aug 12:15

Hog Slat launched an upgraded AirStorm fan at World Pork Expo that increases output by 13.5 per cent and efficiency rates. "We've made some upgrades to our current offering. We've increased the resistance; we've changed from stainless to now we offer a coated aluminum product," said Austin Baker, Director of Ventilation with Hog Slat. "This was able to cut back on our shipping costs for that fan itself as well as increase the strength and rigidity. The way that this X brace is now mounted into our fan, we've isolated it from the housing itself which cuts back on the vibrations that the fan's putting out." Hog Slat has. Read more...

Extreme Weather Conditions, Climate Change Account for 40% of Wheat Production Variability

  • 7 Jul 11:48

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) scientists have proposed a new approach for identifying the impacts of climate change and extreme weather on the variability of global and regional wheat production. The study analysed the effect of heat and water anomalies on crop losses over a 30-year period. JRC scientists studied the relative importance of heat stress and drought on wheat yields between 1980 and 2010. They developed a new Combined Stress Index in order to better understand the effects of concurrent heat and water stress events. The study 'Wheat yield loss attributable to heat waves, drought and water excess at the global,. Read more...

Global Diet, Farming Methods 'Must Change for Environment's Sake,' Says Study

  • 22 Jun 10:49

Reducing meat consumption and using more efficient farming methods globally are essential to stave off irreversible damage to the environmental, a new study says. The research, from the University of Minnesota, also found that future increases in agricultural sustainability are likely to be driven by dietary shifts and increases in efficiency, rather than changes between food production systems. Researchers examined more than 740 production systems for more than 90 different types of food, to understand the links between diets, agricultural production practices and environmental degradation. Their results were published last week in the. Read more...
