Global food commodity prices are projected to remain low over the next decade compared to previous peaks, as demand growth in a number of emerging economies is expected to slow down and biofuel policies have a diminished impact on markets, according to the latest 10-year agricultural outlook published by the OECD and FAO. Global food commodity prices rose in June, led by wheat and meat prices.TheFAOFood Price Index, a monthly trade-weighted index tracking international market prices of five major food commodity groups, released today, averaged 175.2 points in June, up 1.4 per cent from May and 7.0 per cent from a year earlier. The FAO Cereal Price Index rose by 4.2 per cent in the month, amid surging prices of high-protein wheat due to deteriorating crop conditions in the United States of America. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) scientists have proposed a new approach for identifying the impacts of climate change and extreme weather on the variability of global and regional wheat production. The study analysed the effect of heat and water anomalies on crop losses over a 30-year period.
