European Beef Prices Slide, Great Britain Remains Top

Europe’s top six most expensive beef countries all witnessed prime deadweight cattle prices slide week ending 13 September. Northern Ireland saw the greatest drop of 13.2 per cent, settling at 448 cents per kilo as GB prices lost 7.6 cents to 485.8 cents per kilo. Sweden, France, Ireland and Luxembourg all lost ground from being above €4 per kilo. Luxembourg’s average was back 8.3 cents to 393.4 cents per kilo. The average EU R3 heifer price for the week slid 6.5 cents per kilo to 393.7 cents, marginally ahead of Luxembourg’s mean value. Bottom of the EU-16 were Poland, Czech Republic and Lithuania. Trade between Russia and Ukraine is coming close to zero, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said. "It should be frankly admitted that today our trade is in a very mediocre condition. It has shrunk several times. And if this continues in future, this trade has a sagging tendency," Medvedev told a press conference after a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Russia-Belarus Union State. Hog Outlook: USDA Hogs and Pigs Reveals Latest Figures

Today's USDA Hogs & Pigs report says there were 3.9 per cent more marketing hogs in the US on September 1 than a year ago. The average of pre-release trade forecasts also was for the market hog inventory to be up 3.9 per cent, write Ron Plain and Scott Brown, Ag Economics, MU. USDA put the breeding herd at 101.1 per cent of a year earlier. The average trade prediction was for 100.3 per cent . The September survey said producers farrowed 1.6 per cent fewer sows this summer than last. USDA said producer farrowing intentions for September-November are for 2.5 per cent fewer sows to farrow than last fall and December-February farrowings are expected to be down. Read more...

Poultry consumption reaches five-year high in 2014

UK poultry consumption reached a five-year high in 2014, revealing that the poultry hygiene concerns that surfaced in the second half of the year did not prevent strong sales. According to Key Note’s Poultry Market Update for 2015, value sales last year grew by 1.6%, reaching £5.23 billion. It estimated that the average Briton consumed 33.1kg of poultry over the course of the year, representing an increase of 0.9% and 3.1% from 2013 and 2010, respectively. Poultry expenditure accounted for 27.2% of total meat expenditure in 2014, which was 0.1 percentage point less than in 2013, but 0.5 percentage points more than in 2010.
