Russia has imposed restrictions on imports of live poultry, fertilized eggs, and poultry products from the Netherlands since yesterday, according to a statement issued by Russia. These restrictions will apply to those goods that are not subject to the food embargo.
Russian veterinary officials have blamed the decision on an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Netherlands. Russia has imported a significant amount of fertilized eggs from the Netherlands in recent years. The restrictions will come at a time when Russian veterinary officials have already been negotiating with Dutch veterinary officials about the potential biological dangers of transporting fertilized eggs to the country.
Experts believe that these restrictions will remain in place as long as the disease is present in the country of origin and the veterinary authorities of the two countries will subsequently consult with each other on the suspension of these restrictions.
These restrictions will apply under the conditions that many experts believe, the origin of the occurrence and outbreak of bird flu in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom can be traced to the migration of birds from Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
