According to official statistics, over the past three months, the average retail price of a kilogram of lamb in the Volgograd region has increased by 50 rubles, and in other regions - by 100 rubles.
In early April, Volgogradstat fixed the consumer price of mutton at 453 rubles per kilogram. By the beginning of July, it had risen to 500 rubles per kilogram, according to the Federal State Statistics Service, but in reality it is more expensive in Volgograd markets. A similar picture is observed in other regions of Russia.
Andrey Proshakov, a farmer from the Ilovlinsky district of the Volgograd region, in his Telegram channel explained the summer jump in prices for lamb by the approach of the Eid al-Adha holiday, which the followers of Islam celebrated last Saturday, July 9. On this day, wealthy Muslims sacrifice a lamb.
According to Proshakov's observations, in the first week of July in some cities the price of mutton went up from 600–800 to 1,500 rubles per kilogram. He assumes that from the middle of the month the price of this type of meat, which takes pride of place on the holiday tables of Muslims, will begin to decline and may return to the June level.
The editors note that before the Orthodox Easter, after the end of Lent, there were no such price fluctuations for beef and pork. Moreover, in the period from early April to early July, pork in the Volgograd region fell in price from 321 to 311 rubles per kilogram.
