Recently, more and more attention has been paid to climate change and its impact on various sectors of the economy. And today we see that this issue has become relevant for the agricultural-industrial complex (AIC). An open conference “The Role of Climate Regulation in the Competitiveness of Russian Agricultural Products” was recently held, organized by the Federal Center “Agroexport” and JSC “KEPT” with the support of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture. The conference discussed important issues related to climate challenges and presented key messages that we will consider in more detail.
One of the main conclusions of the conference is the need to take climate factors into account when developing strategies for individual companies and the entire industry as a whole. Today the state is already beginning to create a regulatory framework to ensure this process. This is important because climate change could seriously affect the production and competitiveness of Russian agricultural products.
Particular attention is paid to exporters, since even the turn to the East did not change this trend. More than 64% of the largest companies in Asia Pacific already have an environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, and more than 70% of the region's companies have defined requirements for the ESG practices of their suppliers. This indicates that the agricultural sector should be actively included in national and international initiatives in the field of sustainable development.
One of the promising opportunities for agricultural companies is joining the National ESG Alliance, the largest business association in the field of sustainable development. This will allow agricultural enterprises and companies to build communications with consumers, counterparties and the government based on environmental and social practices. Introducing the concept of sustainable development can not only be a step towards a more environmentally friendly business, but also an opportunity to improve the company's image and attract new customers.
