The press service of the ANO "Russian Quality System" (Roskachestvo) reports that on Tuesday, January 30, as part of the international exhibition and forum "Russia" at VDNKh, a panel discussion "Regional brands - tools for increasing the investment and tourist attractiveness of the region" was held, organized by the federal Intellectual Property Service (Rospatent) and the Federation Council (SF).

The moderator of the discussion, which included representatives of government bodies, regional administrations and business, was the head of Rospatent, Yuri Zubov. The audience discussed measures to support and promote local brands, the advantages and economic effect for the region from registering an appellation of origin (AP) and a geographical indication (GI).

Currently, 335 regional brands are registered in Russia. According to Yuri Zubov, Rospatent takes care of their legal protection and, together with the Federation Council, promotes them in every possible way.

Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia Maxim Kolesnikov focused on the role of regional brands in the economy: ensuring recognition of local goods and services, creating stable consumer demand. Many of these brands become trademarks. The annual growth has already exceeded 30%, and this is very good dynamics.

The head of Roskachestvo, Maxim Protasov, said that in Russia there are more and more brands that focus on their place of origin. Interest in them is growing: for 64% of buyers, when choosing, it is important that the products are produced in their home city or its surroundings, and more than 54% give priority to products under regional brands. Thus, the registration and effective use of GIs and ATMs can provide an additional stimulus to the development of the region’s economy.

Interim Director of the Tula Entrepreneurship Support Center Foundation Oleg Zaitsev and Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Mordovia Batyr Emeev shared their experience in developing regional brands. Platforms are being created where they sell exclusively locally produced products, competitions are held for the best products, specialized organizations support the participation of local manufacturers in Russian and foreign exhibitions and fairs. Last year, in Mordovia, with the assistance of the Federal Institute of Industrial Property (FIPS) and Rospatent, to improve the legal literacy of manufacturers of unique goods, a seminar was held on registration of GIs and ATMs.
