According to the National Rating Agency (NRA), live pork production in Russia will surpass the levels of the previous 30 years and reach a record 6 million tons. Experts believe that production in carcass weight will exceed 4.45 million tons.
“Pork production keeps growing at an accelerated rate. In the first half of the year, agricultural organizations increased production of pork and poultry by 8% and 5% respectively, compared to the first half of 2021. Production of cattle decreased by 3%. According to NRA estimates, about 6 million tons of pigs will be produced in 2022,” the forecast says.
Pork production growth results in decrease in prices. The price for this type of meat remained at the same level compared to the previous year.
During the barbecue season this year pork was 38% cheaper, than beef, but 80% more expensive than chicken legs, experts say. The price gap between pork and poultry has seen a reduction over the past years. “NRA expects increased competition between these two kinds of meat for a place in the consumer’s basket, with beef being more expensive and import-dependent,” the study said.
Thus, according to NRA estimates, 32% of the meat plate of an average Russian consumer is given to pork, 52% to poultry, and 15% to beef. Experts believe that the share of pork will grow to 35% in the coming years.
