Transshipment of containers in Russian seaports in the second quarter of 2022 (compared to the same period last year) decreased by almost 34.9%, in the first half of the year - by 17.3%. This assessment was provided by the container terminal operator in the Russian market Global Ports, based on the figures for cargo turnover for 2021 and information from the Association of Commercial Sea Ports.

First of all, these indicators were affected by the ports of the Baltic region: in the second quarter, transshipment fell by 61%, including 57.1% at the terminals of St. Petersburg and the region. In the southern ports, the decline was 11.6%, in the Far East - 13.2%.

“The forecast for cargo turnover in the Baltic basin for 2022 assumes a significant decrease in volumes compared to 2021, while the Far East market is expected to be more stable,” Global Ports said.

The only direction where transshipment increased in the second quarter compared to the same period last year was the northern ports, the growth was 17.1%.

According to the Association of Commercial Sea Ports (AMTP), in January-June this year, the cargo turnover of Russian seaports decreased by 0.5% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 410.0 million tons.

The Association for the first half of the year recorded a decrease in the cargo turnover of the ports of the Caspian basin (by 30.6%), the Far Eastern basin (by 1.9%), the Baltic basin (by 0.2%), the Azov-Black Sea basin (by 0.6%) . Growth is recorded only in the ports of the Arctic Basin (by 4.8%) compared to the first half of last year.

In early April, the EU imposed a ban on Russian-flagged ships from entering community ports. Exceptions are possible for ships that transport agricultural products, food, humanitarian aid.
