The Magnit trading network launched a project in Karelia to process food waste into fertilizer using fly larvae. This was reported by the press service of the retailer.

Food products that have lost their consumer properties are sent for processing, including those that the chain did not have time to sell before their expiration date - fruits, vegetables and bakery products.

Today, products for processing are collected in 10 retail outlets in the region: in two hypermarkets and eight convenience stores.

The products are transferred to the Karelian Biotechnologies company, where they are removed from the packages and distributed in boxes, where water is added for the desired level of substrate moisture. Then fly larvae are added to the substrate, which are able to process organic waste. The resulting zoohumus - organic fertilizers for plants - is sieved, dried and crushed. In addition to fertilizers, the company produces protein feed additives for agriculture.

Today, the retailer is looking for companies from other regions that specialize in the organic processing of food products that have lost their consumer properties, said Nadezhda Galaktionova, head of the sustainability department of the Magnit retail chain.
