The Committee on Food Security, established by the Lebanese government, is considering the possibility of purchasing wheat, vegetable oil and basic foodstuffs from Russia in the near future. This was stated to a TASS correspondent by the Minister of Economy and Trade of the Republic Amin Salam.
“From the point of view of logistics, such supplies are beneficial for the Lebanese side,” he said. “Besides, there are no obstacles for us to trade with Russia because of the sanctions imposed by the West.”
According to Salam, the Lebanese Ministry of Economy and Trade has established contacts with Russian partners. “We are interested in buying food at reasonable prices,” he said. “In addition, we could offer barter deals, for example, to exchange Lebanese apples for Russian wheat.”
On March 4, Minister Salam stated that his country needs to purchase 50,000 tons of grain to replenish a two-month supply. According to him, the shortage was formed due to the cessation of food supplies from Ukraine, which, in particular, provided 60% of Lebanon's needs for wheat.
On March 10, the government of the republic imposed a ban on the export of more than 20 food products produced in Lebanon in order to ensure food security. This list includes meat, canned vegetables and fruits, dairy products, pasta, sugar, bread, coffee beans and tea. Since 2019, food prices in Lebanon have risen by more than 400%, driven by economic and financial collapse, according to the World Food Programme.
