In 2022, meat consumption among Russians has increased significantly. Experts believe that this will not end, and in 2023 the growth in meat consumption will maintain a positive trend.
By the end of 2023, meat consumption in Russia may reach 80 kg per person per year, says Yury Kovalev, general director of the National Union of Pig Breeders. For Russia, this will be a new record - the previous one was set in 2022, when the industry reached the level of consumption of 79 kg per year, the report says.
The main engines of development in this industry are pork and poultry, the expert noted. Thus, over the first six months, pork consumption in Russia increased by 2.1% compared to the same period last year, and together with poultry, this figure is 2%. If the positive dynamics continues, then by the end of 2023 the volume of meat consumed will exceed 80 kg per capita per year.
The expert calls the decrease in prices the main reason for the growth in meat consumption. Previously, experts noted that changes in price affect the structure of the market and the choice of buyers - for example, due to the fact that pork and poultry have become closer in price, buyers have become more likely to choose pork. At the same time, due to rising prices for fish, buyers have become more likely to choose meat products, especially in the canned food industry.
