Meat prices rose strongly in 2021 and H1 2022, driven largely by high feed prices. In the second half of 2022, as well as in January-February 2023, prices for pork and poultry meat in general tended to weaken. As for beef, there is an unprecedented increase in prices. In February 2023, they reached peak levels for the entire period considered in the study.
The weakening of prices for pork and poultry meat in the AB-Center is mainly associated with a significant increase in production volumes, as well as with some weakening in feed prices. Pork production in agricultural organizations of the country in 2022, compared to 2021, increased by 266.7 thousand tons, poultry meat - by 249.8 thousand tons. In January-February 2023, growth trends continued. Thus, the production of pork increased by 49.6 thousand tons, compared with the same period last year, poultry meat - by 21.8 thousand tons.
As for beef, according to the results of 2022, in farms of all categories, production indicators decreased by 51.6 thousand tons. An increase in imports could contribute to a decrease in beef prices. But in 2022, compared to 2021, the volume of imports of chilled and frozen beef to the Russian Federation increased slightly, and according to the results of January-February 2023, if we do not take into account shipments from the EAEU countries, supplies, according to AB-Center, and were completely reduced. As for beef offal, the volume of their imports to Russia in 2022 remained practically unchanged, and in January-February 2023 they significantly decreased.
Wholesale prices for live cattle and poultry for slaughter
KRS. The average wholesale prices for cattle, as of February 2023, according to Rosstat, amounted to 140,331 RUB/t without VAT. Compared to January 2023, prices decreased by 2.8%, over the year they increased by 8.0%.
Pigs. The average wholesale prices for live pigs for slaughter, as of February 2023, amounted to 100,399 RUB/t without VAT. Over the month they decreased by 3.9%, over the year - by 2.6%.
Agricultural bird. In February 2023, the average wholesale prices for poultry for slaughter were at the level of 95,455 RUB/t without VAT. Over the month they, according to the calculations of AB-Center, decreased by 2.6%, over the year - by 4.8%.
Sheep and goats. The average wholesale prices for sheep and goats, as of February 2023, amounted to 111,121 RUB/t without VAT, which is 26.0% less than in January 2023. Over the year, prices increased by 7.2%.

Pork. Average wholesale prices for pork in February 2023 amounted to 151,228 RUB/t without VAT. Over the month they decreased by 2.9%, over the year - by 3.9%.
Beef. As of February 2023, the average wholesale prices for beef were at the level of 366,097 RUB/t without VAT. Compared to January 2023, prices, according to AB-Center, increased by 0.3%. Their growth by 25.9% is noted for the year.
Poultry meat. The average wholesale prices for poultry meat, as of February 2023, amounted to 120,803 RUB/t without VAT. Compared to January 2023, prices decreased by 1.6%, for the year (by February 2022) - by 5.7%.
Retail prices for meat by type - Statistics by month
Pork on the bone. In February 2023, retail prices for bone-in pork in Russia were at the level of 303.1 RUB/kg, which is 1.1% less than in January 2023. For the year they decreased by 1.0%.
Pork is boneless. Retail prices for boneless pork in Russia in February 2023 were at 391.3 RUB/kg. Over the month they weakened by 0.8%, over the year - by 1.2%.
Beef on the bone. In February 2023, retail prices for bone-in beef in Russia amounted to 487.5 RUB/kg, which is 0.3% higher than in January 2023. Over the year, they strengthened by 13.8%.
