Based on the results of the first half of 2024, pork consumption continued to grow in Russia. It amounted to 6%, or 128 thousand tons in slaughter weight, said the General Director of the National Union of Pig Breeders Yuri Kovalev, speaking at the general annual meeting of the union members.

“Almost the entire additional production volume went to increase consumption both in retail channels and in meat processing,” noted Yuri Kovalev.

According to him, the main reason for this growth was the low price. The increase in prices for pork turned out to be lower than for other types of meat, primarily in comparison with poultry. Thus, based on the results of the first five months of this year, the average wholesale price for live pigs was equal to the average price for the entire 2023 – 127 rubles/kg.

“Taking into account the seasonal increased demand in July–September, we cautiously predict that the average price for the entire 2024 will be in the range of 125–130 rubles/kg, that is, 5% higher than last year,” commented Yuri Kovalev .

According to the union's forecasts, in the medium term, pork consumption in the country will remain at the same level.
