Russian grocery chains reduced margins on socially important goods from 22% to 6%. The average markup level for the cheapest goods fell in 11 retail chains. This was announced by the head of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia Maxim Shaskolsky.
The list of socially significant goods in the food basket is determined by Rospotrebnadzor. This list includes milk, bread, eggs, sunflower butter, flour, potatoes, tea, sugar, chicken, beef and pork - more than 20 types of inexpensive products in total.
Since March 2022, the FAS has allowed chains to sell a limited number of a number of essential products in one hand: sugar, vegetable oil, salt, pasta, flour, various types of cereals and other goods. During the same period, retailers had to set a threshold markup of 5% of the purchase price for some of the socially important products from the list. If the cost of products from the list exceeds 30% or more per month, the Government of the Russian Federation has the right to start direct price regulation.
