Andrey Dalnov, head of the Rosselkhozbank Center for Industry Expertise, predicts that meat consumption in Russia this year could reach 80 kg per person. Speaking at a round table as part of the Russian Retail Week, he noted that meat consumption in our country has been growing for the past 20 years and in 2022 amounted to 79 kg, while the norm recommended by the Ministry of Health is 73 kg, Interfax writes. According to the expert, poultry meat occupies a dominant position among all types of meat, accounting for 40% of the consumption structure. Pork accounts for 37%, while its consumption is growing dynamically and can catch up with broiler levels. Beef consumption is stagnating.
Also, according to Dalnov, the gap between the norm and the actual consumption of fish in Russia is still quite large. Executive Director of the Association of Production and Trade Enterprises of the Fish Market Alexander Fomin said at the round table that, according to Rosstat, fish consumption last year amounted to 21.5 kg per person. However, according to him, this number takes into account the fish in live weight. According to the calculations of the Association, the real consumption was 16 kg. According to the presentation of the Russian Agricultural Bank, the norm of fish consumption in Russia since 2022 is 28 kg per person. In the structure of consumption, the most popular are herring species (45%), cod (26%) and salmon (10%).
Chairman of the Presidium of the Association of Retail Companies (AKORT) Igor Karavaev said that over the past three weeks, among the socially important meat products of the first price in federal networks, the purchase price for broiler chicken has grown the most - by more than 5%. The price of mutton also increased slightly - less than 1%. Prices for pork and beef fell by 2% and 1% respectively. If we compare the past week with the same one in 2022, then the wholesale prices for beef and pork also show a decrease.
Dalnov spoke about the growth of meat consumption in Russia back in February. Then he noted that for almost ten years Russia has been setting records for meat consumption, and this year, most likely, it will exceed 80 kg per capita. In his opinion, animal husbandry is one of the most successfully built projects of business and the state in terms of import substitution. The expert noted that in Russia there is a problem with life expectancy, and it is possible that it is related to nutrition, and the state can influence it.
Meat consumption in Russia in 2022 increased by 2.3% compared to 2021 and reached a record high for at least 10 years - 79 kg per person per year, estimated by the National Union of Pig Breeders (NSS). The increase in meat in the diet was provided by pork and poultry meat. The indicator for pork, according to the union, was a record over the past 30 years, its consumption increased by 5.9% year-on-year, to 29.8 kg per person per year. The share of pork in total meat consumption reached 37.5%.
Poultry meat has the largest share in total consumption - 44.3%, according to the NSS. In 2022, Russians consumed an average of about 35 kg per person, an increase of 2% compared to 2021. The consumption of beef and lamb in 2022 fell by 1.9% and 7.1% respectively.
