Retail trade turnover in Russia in September 2022 decreased by 9.8% compared to September 2021, to 3 trillion 545.7 billion rubles, Rosstat said.
The result turned out to be better than expected: the consensus forecast of Interfax assumed a decrease in retail turnover by 10.2%.
However, compared to the dynamics in August (-8.8% yoy), the decline in retail trade turnover accelerated. In addition, in September, for the first time since April, retail trade turnover decreased by 2.6% on a monthly basis (after rising by 3.3% in August versus July).
The turnover of retail trade in food products, including drinks, and tobacco products in September decreased by 3.5% compared to last year, to 1.735 trillion rubles. Thus, in September the dynamics turned out to be the most unfavorable for the period of II and III quarters.
The turnover of non-food retail in September fell by 15% to 1 trillion 810.7 billion rubles (in August - by 14%).
Rosstat noted that in September, in the structure of retail trade turnover, the share of food products, including drinks, and tobacco products amounted to 48.9%, non-food products - 51.1% (in September 2021 - 45.8% and 54.2% respectively).
In the third quarter, the retail trade turnover in Russia decreased by 9.1%, to 10.729 trillion rubles (in the second quarter, the decrease was 9.8%, in the first quarter, an increase of 3.5% was recorded).
In particular, the turnover of food retail in the III quarter decreased by 2.5%, to 5.287 trillion rubles (in the II quarter - by 1.9%, in the I quarter - increased by 3.1%). Sales of non-food products in July-September fell by 14.5% to 5.442 trillion rubles (in the II quarter - by 16.6%, in the I quarter - increased by 3.9%).
Over the nine months of 2022, the retail trade turnover decreased by 5.5%, to 31 trillion 198.8 billion rubles, including food retail - by 0.5% (to 15 trillion 376.7 billion rubles), non-food - by 9 .7% (up to 15 trillion 822.1 billion rubles).
