Russia and the World Food Program (WFP) in the UN system are preparing a new agreement on strategic partnership. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Vershinin.
“We are now discussing the conclusion of a new agreement on strategic partnership between Russia and WFP. The draft document is in the WFP secretariat with our amendments. We are waiting for a response from the organization. And we believe that the sooner this document is signed, the better. [WFP Executive Director Cindy] McCain confirmed to me the desire to continue our interaction, including on the basis of this document," Sergey Vershinin said.
He said that at the meeting with McCain, the mood for constructive and mutually respectful cooperation without politicization was confirmed, which "is unacceptable in ensuring food security."
The Deputy Foreign Minister assured that Russia would continue to allocate funds for the implementation of WFP programs, provide financial assistance and continue the projects launched, despite the objective difficulties due to Western sanctions. The World Food Program, he said, should help ensure normal work with the Russian Federation, which is important from the point of view of ensuring food security. "There are plans, they concern Central Asia, Africa. Both last year and this year we provided considerable financial assistance in the implementation of food and agricultural projects in African countries," the diplomat said.
