Poultry production in Russia has been growing in recent years, and in 2022 alone, poultry meat production increased by 4.3%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Russia has already achieved self-sufficiency in poultry meat and is now increasing the production of hatching eggs.
Poultry farming is the leader among all meat production industries in Russia - this industry accounts for 43.5% of all meat produced in Russia, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. In 2022, this volume amounted to 7 million tons in live weight, which was more than 4% more than a year earlier, the agency said. In total, Russia accounts for up to 5% of poultry meat produced in the world. In the top world exporters of poultry meat, Russia ranks 11th, and it accounts for 1.9% of exports, according to the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Agroanalytics".
At the moment, one of the priority tasks in the industry is to provide poultry farms with hatching eggs, and to solve this problem, the ministry sends support to poultry farmers - compensation for the costs incurred in the construction of second-order reproducers. According to the ministry, this support is already bringing good results - in 2022, the import of hatching eggs decreased by 1.7 times, and this year it has already decreased by another 40%. By the end of the year, self-sufficiency in eggs should reach 92%.
Poultry farmers are also working to reduce dependence on imported genetic material. To this end, the breeding centers are replicating the domestic meat cross Smena-9, the department said. This cross is characterized by high performance, laying hens have egg production up to 82%. In addition, the chickens of this cross quickly gain weight, and the meat has a pleasant taste, which is appreciated by consumers.
