For the first time in fifteen years, China has allowed the supply of domestic pork into the country. Experts note that this market will have to face competition from long-established players, but you can count on 10% of the market.
The market for imported pork in China is about 2 million tons, reports the Federal State Budgetary Institution Agroexport. For the first time since 2008, Russia will join the supply of pork to this country, and exporters expect to reach a volume of 150-200 thousand tons, according to a report seen by sfera.fm.
As Yuri Kovalev, director of the National Union of Pig Breeders, explained to Agroexport, Russian producers cannot start supplies right now, since they still need to wait for China’s requirements for Russian pork. In addition, exporters will have to deal with suppliers from other countries who have long occupied this niche in the Chinese market. However, the export of domestic pork to Vietnam has proven that this product is in demand in foreign markets, the expert noted, so exporters expect to occupy up to 10% of the Chinese imported pork market in the future.
Together with the growth of pork exports to China to 150-200 thousand tons, the total export of pork in Russia will reach the level of 400-500 thousand tons, the expert believes. In this case, Russia will be able to enter the top 5 world pork exporters. Russia now ranks eighth in this ranking, exporting an average of 200 thousand tons of pork per year.
