At the opening of a Serbia-Russia agroindustry forum on Wednesday, Serbian Agriculture Minister Branislav Nedimovic said he expected good discussions between Russian and Serbian companies over the next two days and new opportunities for growth of bilateral trade in agriculture.

“After the signature of a trade agreement with the Russian Federation, agricultural exchange has grown from 100 mln dollars to 480 mln dollars,” Nedimovic said.

He said representatives of Miratorg and X5, two of Russia’s four largest retail chains, were at the forum to assess the quality of Serbian goods.

“We will try to get into their stores with even more goods and try to boost our exports, which are extremely high at this time, at over 360 mln dollars,” he said.

Nedimovic said the start of implementation of a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union, slated for July, would be an opportunity to market even more Serbian goods in Russia.

He announced government subsidies for organic production due to rising demand for organic products in the Russian market.

Serbian companies can already boost their shipments of fresh and processed fruits, processed meat products, grains and flour, he said.

Russian Deputy Agriculture Minister Sergey Levin said trade between the two countries was seeing stable growth and development in all areas, including agriculture.

“We have great potential for further development of trade, aided by the existence of political will, the historical ties between our nations and the climate in Russia. Today’s event and the presence of leading Russian agroindustry companies will contribute to further growth of trade ties,” Levin said.
