According to data provided by Rosselkhoznadzor, a total of 17 cases of African swine fever (ASF) were confirmed in Russia between 1 January and 4 April 2022.
The most part of it was registered among wild boars - 11 cases. Six ASF outbreaks were confirmed at commercial farms.
The outbreaks occurred in domestic swine in the Astrakhan, Samara, Saratov, Sverdlovsk regions, Khabarovsk Territory and the Republic of Bashkortostan.
It’s worth noting that epidemiological evidence suggests that the disease has a more severe representation in Europe. Within the week from April 2 to 8, more than 475 new cases of ASF were reported by EU countries to OIE .
The greatest number of outbreaks occurred in Poland (442). New outbreaks were also reported in Hungary (15), Italy (7), Latvia (10), and Romania (12).
Reference – African swine fever is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs with a 100% mortality rate. There is no specific treatment or effective vaccine for ASF. Victoria Abramchenko, Deputy prime minister of Russian Federation, ordered the development and application of a domestic vaccine against ASF in cattle.
Wild hogs are considered to be the dominant natural hosts of ASF virus. Infection causes high fever, vomiting and bloody diarrhea in wild and domestic pigs. ASF does not present a threat to public health, although scientists presume mutations are possible.
