Sheep pox outbreak was registered in the Derbent region of Dagestan, according to the report compiled by the information and analytical center of Rosselkhoznadzor on February 1, 2022. The disease was confirmed on the private farm in the village of Dyuzler. There was a total of 1 thousand sheep in the herd on the affected farm, 82 of which died of the disease.  

The authorities have started vaccination of the herd in response to the outbreak, the report said.

This is the first confirmed case of sheep pox in Russia in 2022.

According to Rosselkhoznadzor, in 2021, 13 cases of sheep pox and goat pox were registered in Russia. The outbreaks of the disease were confirmed in Ivanovskaya Oblast, Kostromskaya Oblast, Yaroslavskaya Oblast and Leningradskaya Oblast.

It is worth noting that new veterinary rules for sheep pox and goat pox will come into force in Russia on March 1, 2022. The new rules will set out requirements for disease prevention, testing, measures to be taken in case of a suspect case of the disease, along with the introduction of quarantine measures. In addition, the new rules will set out the requirements for animal vaccination and introduction of protection and surveillance zones.

Sheep pox is an acute contagious disease of sheep, goats and other ruminants of cavicornian family.

Clinical signs of sheep pox include fever, difficult breathing, swelling of the eyelids, oculonasal discharge, and development of popular-pustular rash on skin and mucous membranes.
