Rosselkhozbank analysts analyzed investment activity in the agricultural technology market in 2022. The amount of financing amounted to 30 million dollars. Bank experts predict an increase in investment volumes in 2023. This was announced on the sidelines of the XXVI St. Petersburg International Economic Forum by Elena Baturova, director of the Center for the Development of Financial Technologies of the Russian Agricultural Bank.
The results of the analysis conducted by the RSHB showed that the steady growth in the flow of investment in the agritech sector, which has continued over the past 10 years, showed a slowdown in 2022. The amount of funds raised last year amounted to $30 million, which was less than in 2021.
Analysts predict that investment in agritech will continue to grow at a steady but moderate pace, driven by various categories of agricultural innovation (with the stabilization of the situation in international economic markets), and not only thanks to the e-commerce segment, which reached its peak of its immediate development in 2021.
In Russia in 2022, in the vast majority of cases, venture funding was received by online food delivery projects. However, among the companies invested in 2022, there are also startups specializing in genomic breeding, technologies in the field of production and retail, organic waste processing, agricultural robotics, sensors and the Internet of Things, plant growth stimulation, plant protection products.
Separately, it is worth noting the active support of agricultural innovations at the state level: more than 8 agrotechnological startups received grants for the development of the domestic industry high-tech business from Skolkovo, the Innovation Promotion Fund, as well as regional funds and operators (moreover, the amount of grants varied in the monetary range from 500 thousand . rub to 260 million rubles). Among the grant recipients were institutions engaged in vertical farming, farm management systems, technologies for precise application of fertilizers and seeds, organization of agro-technological activities, development of software for veterinary laboratory diagnostics and information and analytical agro-platform, audit of agricultural land using unmanned aerial vehicles, etc.
“In 2021, investments in agricultural technology set the highest bar in terms of volume. It turned out to be quite difficult to continue the positive dynamics in 2022. However, it is reasonable to expect that in 2023 investors will be more active in the agro-technological direction, and caution, generated by a whole set of global socio-economic reasons, will be replaced by enthusiasm in terms of potential funding for promising agro-tech projects, including in Russia,” noted Elena Baturova, director of the Center for the Development of Financial Technologies of the Russian Agricultural Bank.
On the RSHB Digital platform, as part of the AgroBit analytical service, a new data visualization panel is presented, dedicated to the long-term dynamics of investment agrotech activity, the distribution of sectoral funding by country, as well as attracting investment in the Russian agrotech sector in the dynamics of the last two years (2021 -2022).
