The Rosselkhoznadzor introduced temporary restrictions on the import of poultry products into Russia from the US states of Virginia and Illinois and the Department of Air of France. Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza have been reported in these regions.
Rosselkhoznadzor recalls the unprecedented international situation with avian influenza. According to the World Organization for Animal Health, since the beginning of 2023, 1,535 outbreaks of avian influenza have been recorded in the world in 48 states. In Europe, 1,073 outbreaks were registered, 3.9 million heads were killed; in Japan - 70 outbreaks, 7.9 million heads killed; in the USA - 80 outbreaks, 700 thousand heads were destroyed; in Canada - 14 outbreaks, 40 thousand heads were killed.
In 2022, influenza was detected on the territory of 70 states - 7.6 thousand foci in the populations of poultry and wild birds. Only in the European Union, the USA and Japan, more than 100 million heads have been destroyed. One of the reasons for such high losses in Western countries was the abandonment of the cage keeping of birds and the transfer of enterprises to the open type of keeping, which, in turn, leads to almost free contact with wild fauna. According to the OIE, about 80% of avian influenza outbreaks in 2022 were associated with wild birds.
