Africa's population will grow to 2.5 billion by 2050, while the continent has one of the lowest meat consumption rates, around 20-30 kg per person per year. Africa is a promising direction for the development of meat exports, where Russian suppliers need to gain a foothold, says Sergey Yushin, head of the National Meat Association. The expert called Africa a promising market for Russian meat

“What pleases this year is that we are expanding our geography, more and more covering African countries. We supply our meat to the southern hemisphere of the planet. This applies to pork and poultry meat,” the head of the association said in an interview with Veterinary and Life.

He drew attention to the fact that it is difficult to work in the African market. “Because this is a different culture, a different culture of international trade, this is a very complex infrastructure, and somewhere it is completely absent. But the population of Africa is more than 1.3 billion people. Of these, 10% (more than 100 million people) are the so-called middle class. That is, almost the entire population of Russia is the middle class of Africa. And they eat quite a bit, at least for now. By 2050 there will be 2.5 billion people in Africa. I think that the economy will grow there and the road infrastructure will develop. Therefore, Africa will consume a lot of protein,” said Sergei Yushin.

The expert clarified that today the average consumption of meat in the world is 42 kg per person per year. In poor African countries - 20-30 kg per person per year.

As for the structure of consumption, the source of "ViZh" noted that chicken carcasses are popular in Africa. “We sell bones to Africa, don't think it's a bad product. This is their food culture: they love to cook broths. I will not name the country, but the politician there said that people should be banned from eating boiled skins. People are so poor that they boil animal skins. This indicates how great the need for inexpensive meat is, summed up Sergey Yushin.
