Russian sausage producers have the potential to increase product supplies to foreign markets up to 80 thousand tons, or 200 million US dollars. This forecast was published by the Federal Center “Agroexport” of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture in a new analytical review of the industry.
The review notes that consumption of sausages and prepared meat products worldwide exceeded 32 million tons in 2022. This is 2.4% higher than the consumption volumes of the previous year.
“The main driver of development is the high consumer demand for convenient and easy-to-prepare products suitable for an urban lifestyle,” the statement said.
It is noted that Russia is one of the 15 largest world exporters of sausages. At the end of last year, the country supplied 55.8 thousand tons of these products worth 126.5 million US dollars to foreign markets.
The key export destinations for Russian sausages remain the markets of neighboring countries, primarily Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Abkhazia, and Armenia.
“Russia is united with these countries by a common historical past, tastes and consumption traditions, thanks to which Russian meat products - from sausages to delicacies - occupy a strong share in these markets. Moreover, for example, in Kazakhstan they believe that the quality of Russian sausage products is higher than that of the products of many local factories,” comments Konstantin Korneev, executive director of Rincon Management LLC.
The analyst also names the markets of the Persian Gulf countries: the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iraq as promising areas. However, the approach to supplies to these markets will be somewhat different.
“There is also potential for the development of sausage exports to the Gulf countries, but it is associated with branded products and serious marketing promotion. Creating a separate line of tastes and specialties, promoting emotions and impressions of the product, in my opinion, is a window of opportunity for developing supplies to these markets,” he commented.
Another promising direction is the markets of the countries of the African continent, primarily Angola, Ghana, Congo and others. Today, Russian manufacturers are developing supplies of frozen and canned sausages and minced semi-finished products to Africa.
“In the coming years, these volumes can be increased,” believes Konstantin Korneev.
Among the Asian countries, the expert considers China and Hong Kong to be the most attractive for supplies of Russian sausages.
