The Russian Ministry of Agriculture appealed to the government with a proposal to zero the import duty on frozen beef and pork into the country within the quota of 200 thousand tons for each species. Izvestia writes about this, referring to the letter of the ministry to the government apparatus dated November 1.

Currently, for the import of foreign products, companies pay a 15% and 25% duty for beef and pork, respectively.

As the newspaper writes, since the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has changed the tariff preferences grid, since October, beef importers when entering Russia have lost the chance to receive a duty discount (at least 15%).

Without it, products will rise in price for the country by about 4% in comparison with the price of imports from distant countries.

In addition, Russia may not have enough of its resources to meet the needs for pork, as its production has previously declined due to outbreaks of African swine fever in some regions.

“The measures proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture will help slow down the rise in prices,” said Mushegh Mamikonyan, chairman of the board of the Russian Meat Union.

Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture announced measures to stabilize prices for meat products in Russia.
