According to Yuri Kovalev, director general of the National Union of Pig Breeders (NSS), the forecasts related to preferential pork imports did not come true.
In January-May, no more than 15 thousand tons of this type of meat were purchased on foreign markets, but for 100 thousand tons, as was originally planned. Prices for pork in the domestic market have decreased against the backdrop of rising world prices, so its import is not economically feasible. Foreign-produced pork has lost its competitiveness in the domestic market.
Until the beginning of 2022, pork imports were subject to a duty of 25%. The decision on zero duty on pork imports was made in October 2021. At that time, according to the results of three quarters, its domestic production, after a long-term increase of 5-10%, for the first time decreased by 0.1%, which worried manufacturers.
Now there is an additional supply of pork on the domestic market. The NSS estimates the increase in production at 6-7%. The volume of exports has declined. The meat that has been exported so far remains in Russia, and this is another 1-2%.
