The method for estimation of wild boar population in feeding grounds and other areas with high wild boar densities has been developed by Federal Forestry Agency of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russian Federation. The document is available on the website of the Ministry.

Regular monitoring of wild boar populations in hunting grounds is part of African swine fever (ASF) prevention effort, the department noted.

The method will allow for a unified approach to the estimation of wild pig populations in all regions of Russia.

Wild boar populations should be monitored both in private and public hunting grounds, as well as in its natural habitats, including natural reserves.

The estimation in areas with high wild boar densities to be carried out within the period from March 16 to January 14. It provides for visual control of animals during their visits to feeding grounds.

The results of the assessment should be summarized in a report on the size of the wild boar population, including a digital map showing wild boar population density.

Reminder: a new procedure for the hunted species population assessment has been in force since August 1, 2021. The assessment of animals subject to catch limits and quotas is carried out in accordance with scientifically based estimation methods, approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russian Federation.
