The head of the executive committee of the meat association Yushin predicted a rise in meat prices in Russia by 20%

The head of the executive committee of the National Meat Association, Sergei Yushin, gave the Russians a forecast for meat prices in 2022 in light of the sanctions imposed by the West. He noted in an interview with Sputnik radio, that the meat market in Russia does not depend much on imports, but a 20 percent increase in cost is possible due to the general rise in food prices in the world.

The expert noted that due to sanctions pressure, there are difficulties with logistics, the cost of transportation by sea is increasing, since several leading container suppliers refused to cooperate with Russia.

The country exports more meat than it imports, Yushin explained. So, in 2021, about 200 thousand tons of pork were exported with minimal imports, this is a significant margin of safety. Dependence on the external market is observed with beef, in the world it is becoming more expensive very quickly, but so far in the wholesale segment it is twice as cheap as in the world market.

The head of the executive committee of the National Meat Association added that a rise in prices could occur, but not because of sanctions. According to him, in March, the food price index of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization on the planet increased by 12.6 percent, food prices are rapidly rising all over the world.

“In Russia, by the end of the year, we assume that the cost of production of various types of meat will increase by an average of 15-20 percent. Will prices go up that much? I cannot give such a forecast, because too many factors influence the prices that we see in stores, ”summed up Yushin.

Earlier it became known that poultry and egg producers urgently need working capital to continue their activities, otherwise they will have a break in production chains. This is stated in a letter from Rosptitsesoyuz to the head of the Ministry of Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev.
