The Ukrainian pig industry started in 2022 with another anti-record for the number of pigs in the country - 5.54 million. This is 5.8% or more than 300 thousand goals. less than a year ago. This was reported by the press service of the Association of Pig Farmers of Ukraine (ASU) with reference to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (SSSU).
The association notes that the basis for such an anti-record was formed by the historical minimum of domestic pigs, which, according to the SSSU, dropped to two million.
"This is 11% less than recorded in early 2021. Active demand for pork on the eve of the winter holidays and, consequently, higher than a year ago sales prices encouraged home-grown pork producers to increase sales of pigs for slaughter at the end of the year", – experts say.
According to experts, the industrial pig population also lost 2.5% compared to last year's starting amount and fell to 3.5 million. At the same time, the share of industrial livestock in the total number of pigs in the country increased to 64% against 61.7% in January 2021.
"The negative dynamics of the number of pigs in the country is a consequence of the long transformation of the industry and the protracted crisis. In such conditions, the growth of domestic pork production should not be expected this year, "the industry association predicts.
It will be recalled that on January 17, the European Union lifted restrictions on the import of poultry products from Ukraine in full.
