The volume of mutual trade (trade) in agricultural products, raw materials and food between Russia and South Africa in 2021 decreased by 15.9% compared to 2020 and amounted to USD 374.7 million. Russian exports to South Africa decreased by 76.6% to $28.8 million, while Russian imports from South Africa increased by 7.3% to $345.9 million. This is stated in the review “Foreign Economic Activity. Republic of South Africa”, prepared by the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Agroexport”.

Russian exports to South Africa in 2021 accounted for 7.7% of the trade turnover of agricultural products between Russia and South Africa. The share of trade turnover of agricultural products between the two countries accounted for 0.5% of the total Russian foreign trade turnover of agricultural products.

Russia's imports from South Africa in 2021 amounted to 313.9 thousand tons in the amount of $345.9 million. The share of South Africa accounted for 1.0% of imports of agricultural products of Russia. The main commodity items in the structure of Russian imports in value terms were oranges (22.4%), fresh pears (13.9%), lemons and limes (12.2%), tangerines (10.7%), apples (9. one%).

The growth of imports in value terms by 7.3% was mainly due to an increase in the supply of oranges (+8.9% by 2020), tangerines (+18.3%), grape wines (+26.2%), plums and sloes ( 2.3 times). At the same time, Russian imports of apples from South Africa decreased (-25.2%).

In 2021, 104.6 thousand tons of products worth $28.8 million were imported from Russia to South Africa. The share of South Africa accounted for less than 0.1% of exports of Russian agricultural products. The main commodity items in the value structure of Russian exports to South Africa in 2021 were wheat (90.4%), coriander seeds (1.8%), millet (0.9%).

The decrease in Russian exports to South Africa in value terms by 76.6% was mainly due to a decrease in wheat supplies (-88.9 million US dollars by 2020), the cessation of supplies of frozen fish (-6.4 million US dollars). At the same time, exports of coriander seeds increased (+0.2 million USD), supplies of extracts and essences of coffee, products from them (+0.2 million USD), starch (+0.2 million USD) began.

The estimated volume of the potential supply of agricultural products from Russia to South Africa is estimated at 300 million US dollars. The key promising positions are cereals (wheat), vegetable oils, frozen fish and other agricultural products. The main competitors for Russian products in the South African market will be the EU countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.
