Russia is ready to participate in solving world food problems, including helping the poorest countries, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday in a video message on the occasion of the Day of Agricultural Workers.

“We fully provide the domestic market with the main, important, necessary for people types of products, successfully solve food security issues and, moreover, increase export opportunities,” the head of state said. Putin noted that Russia can contribute to overcoming global food problems to provide necessary assistance to the poorest, developing countries.

The President believes that all this is a direct result of the efforts invested by farmers, workers of agriculture and the processing industry, their difficult, but necessary and responsible work.

Putin stressed that the agro-industrial complex, one of the key sectors of the Russian economy, "demonstrates a convincing, worthy result" year after year. "A record grain harvest is expected this year, about 150 million tons, including about 100 million tons of wheat," the president said. Putin stressed that recently such figures seemed elusive. The President added that high rates are also recorded for other crops, such as soybean, sunflower, sugar beet. In addition, the volume of livestock production is growing.

"Working under unprecedented sanctions pressure poses new challenges for the agro-industrial complex. We will solve them together, with the support of the state, and use the imposed restrictions for our own development," Putin said. The head of state stressed that it is necessary to increase the level of technological sovereignty in the agro-industrial complex, which means increasing our capabilities in breeding, genetics, seed production, stimulating the transition to modern domestic equipment and machinery, and creating conditions for further investment. Putin recalled the approval in September of an updated sectoral strategy, including taking into account these tasks.
