Global food commodity prices rose in June, led by wheat and meat prices.TheFAOFood Price Index, a monthly trade-weighted index tracking international market prices of five major food commodity groups, released today, averaged 175.2 points in June, up 1.4 per cent from May and 7.0 per cent from a year earlier. The FAO Cereal Price Index rose by 4.2 per cent in the month, amid surging prices of high-protein wheat due to deteriorating crop conditions in the United States of America. Maize prices, by contrast, declined amid record harvests in South America. FAO's price indices for meat and dairy products also rose, while those for vegetable oils and sugar. Read more...

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) scientists have proposed a new approach for identifying the impacts of climate change and extreme weather on the variability of global and regional wheat production. The study analysed the effect of heat and water anomalies on crop losses over a 30-year period. JRC scientists studied the relative importance of heat stress and drought on wheat yields between 1980 and 2010. Chicago Mercantile Exchange lean hog futures settled higher on Thursday, and the July contract notched fresh highs, supported by their discounts to cash prices and fund buying prior to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's neutral quarterly hog report, said traders. The USDA's report showed a record number of hogs for the March-May period, but the results were within analysts' forecasts. July ended 1.550 cents per pound higher at 89.475 cents, and hit a fresh high of 89.650 cents. August finished 1.275 cents higher at 80.750 cents, and above the 20-day moving average of 80.378 cents.
