Dr Andrii Zhuk, First Deputy Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer production, has reported an outbreak of African swine fever at a farm in Poltava.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reports that the outbreak was first noticed on 31 August and confirmed on 1 September after a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was carried out at the State Scientific and Research Institute on Laboratory Diagnosis and Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise.

An immediate notification was sent to the OIE on 4 September, stating that a total of 5173 pigs were found susceptible in a farm called Plekhiv Agro, out of which 48 cases and deaths were reported. A complete stamping out and all related measures are ongoing, reports the OIE.

The source of the outbreak has not yet been confirmed.
