Director General of the National Union of Beef Producers (NSPG) Roman Kostyuk said that in the short term, the decline in the production of high-quality cattle meat will turn into a steady trend. It is produced and exported by only two domestic companies. The rest are not interested in the development of this line of business, and no measures of state support will change the situation.
Kostyuk noted that due to a decrease in purchasing power, the population is replacing beef with cheaper types of meat. Beef, for which Russia is more than 20% dependent on imports, is being replaced by pork and poultry.
According to the NCAP forecast, the volume of beef purchases in Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay may decrease due to the low solvency of importers, and the country will gradually return to the volume that it is able to produce. It is worth considering that part of the meat coming from the countries of South America is the raw material for sausages, the expert recalled.
The main source of beef in Russia is the dairy industry. Europe no longer exports livestock to Russia, even pre-paid. The only promising supplier of livestock at competitive prices through Novorossiysk may be the United States.
Now 195 industrial enterprises are engaged in beef cattle breeding in Russia. Approximately half of the animals of specialized breeds fall on farms. According to the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), in 2021, beef production amounted to 3.1 million tons (+0.6% year-on-year).
