Russian producers are unlikely to be happy about the zeroing of import duties on meat, says economist Nikita Krichevsky. Earlier, the media reported that the Ministry of Agriculture proposed to zero import duties on frozen beef and pork as part of a quota to stabilize meat prices. According to the department, the measure will increase the supply in the domestic market and curb the rise in food prices.
At the same time, Krichevsky drew attention to the fact that world prices for meat have already been declining for three months in a row. Domestic prices have also declined slightly over the past two weeks, he added.
"Plus to this - forecasts for the coming year, according to which the increase in pork production will be 7-8%. A decrease in prices is inevitable," the expert noted.
In addition, according to him, Russia is almost entirely self-sufficient in pork.
“I wonder if the butchers have enough lobbying and media opportunities not to zero duties even on pork (just got on their feet, high costs, high inflation),” concluded Krichevsky.
