Food prices in Russia in December 2023, compared to December 2022, generally show a significant increase. AB-Center analyzed the dynamics of retail prices for 123 goods, of which a decrease was observed in only 20 goods. Prices have strengthened for 103 items.
At the same time, price increases for some items look extreme. Price strengthening of over 40% over the year is demonstrated by 6 goods, from 20 to 40% - by 6 goods, from 10 to 20% - by 14 goods. As for the decline in prices for goods, it is much less pronounced. Thus, price weakening of more than 10% is observed only for three items.
In December 2023, the inflation rate in Russia was 7.42% (annualized for the last 12 months, according to the portal level-inflation.rf). An increase in prices above the inflation rate is observed only for 35 goods out of 103 that increased in price and out of 123 analyzed items in general. At the same time, calculation of the arithmetic average percentage change in prices for all analyzed items shows that, in general, food prices increased by 7.7% over the year.
Thus, on an annual basis, food prices as a whole are rising in price at a rate slightly faster than the overall inflation rate in the country.
Leaders in food price growth
To a greater extent, the increase in prices for the year, according to AB-Center calculations, affected the following food products: chicken eggs (+62.1%), grapes (+54.0%), fresh tomatoes (+50.1%), pears ( +48.6%), garlic (+46.4%), bananas (+44.1%), fresh white cabbage (+37.2%), oranges (+35.7%), lemons (+30. 8%), chilled and frozen chickens (+27.7%).

In addition to the goods of the first group, strengthening prices (by 7.42% and higher) at AB-Center are noted for chicken legs, apples, fresh cucumbers, fresh herbs, poultry culinary products, boneless pork, lamb (except boneless meat), olive oil , carrots, coffee in quick service organizations, beets, turkey meat, pork (except boneless meat), polished rice, canned tomatoes, granulated sugar, piece bakery products made from premium flour, whole frozen fish, frozen squid, fish fillet , fresh mushrooms, dry milk mixtures for baby food, fortified grape wine, minced meat, smoked meats.
Food price increases are below the inflation rate
Price increases below the inflation rate (lower than 7.42%), according to AB-Center calculations, were observed for beef (except boneless meat), dumplings, manti, ravioli, onions, boiled sausage, boneless beef, cakes, natural vegetables canned, pickled, domestic sparkling wine, sausages, sausages, bread made from rye flour and from a mixture of rye and wheat flour, live and chilled fish, ice cream, bread and bakery products made from various types of wheat flour, national cheeses and feta cheese, raw smoked sausage, dry soups in bags, semi-smoked and boiled-smoked sausage, frozen cut fish (except salmon), mineral and drinking water, marshmallows, marshmallows, natural bee honey, fruit juices, nuts, salted, marinated, smoked fish, carbonated drinks, fillets salted herring, ketchup, grape table wine, canned fish in tomato sauce, dried fruits, caramel, canned meat, canned vegetables for baby food, bagel products.
Also, price strengthening below the inflation rate was observed for gingerbreads, curd cheeses coated with chocolate, preserves, jam, marmalade, muffins, rolls, butter, soft candies coated with chocolate, vodka, hard, semi-hard and soft cheeses, cookies, salted herring, canned food natural fish and with the addition of oil, canned meat for baby food, pasteurized whole drinking milk 2.5-3.2% fat, chilled and frozen cut salmon fish, black long tea, salted and smoked delicatessen fish products, ordinary domestic cognac , chewing gum, processed cheeses, condensed milk with sugar, yogurt, chocolate candies, natural and with additives, table salt, cocoa, green tea, whole frozen shrimp, cereal flakes (breakfast cereals), frozen berries, bagged black tea, natural beans and ground coffee, frozen vegetables, sour cream, mayonnaise, salmon caviar, domestic.
Food products that have decreased in price over the year
Over the year, prices for buckwheat groats (-19.8%), potatoes (-12.1%), oatmeal and pearl barley (-10.9%), sterilized whole drinking milk decreased in price 2.5-3.2% fat content (-4.4%), drinking cream (-4.4%), wheat flour (-3.6%), margarine (-2.6%), vermicelli (-2.6%), sunflower oil ( -2.5%), millet (-1.8%).
