In the last year, sales of meat products in Russia increased by 3.2%. This important discovery was made at the XV International Scientific and Practical Conference “Pig Breeding-2023” by GFK consultant Anastasia Anoprieva. She shared interesting facts about meat spending patterns and sales growth trends.
The main factors influencing the growth in sales of meat products are an increase in the frequency of purchases by 2.1% and an increase in the average price by 3.4%. This means that consumers are purchasing meat more frequently and are also willing to pay more for quality products.
Meat occupies a significant share of expenses in the consumer basket, amounting to 13%. Compared to last year, spending on meat in monetary terms increased, but purchase volumes remained at last year’s level. This suggests that meat remains the top food category for consumers.
It is interesting to note that meat is one of the few categories that has not seen a decline in sales. While other categories, including dairy and fish, are experiencing declining demand, meat continues to show steady growth.
Analyzing the structure of the meat basket, it can be noted that the highest sales growth is observed in duck (16.5%) and pork (4.5%). However, sales of turkey, lamb and meat pâtés were down. Lamb showed the biggest decline in sales, down 13.2%, while turkey decreased by 6.3%. Other meat products also decreased slightly within 3%.
The cost aspect also plays an important role in sales of meat products. Meat pâtés showed the greatest growth in value terms (11.8%), followed by beef (10.5%) and duck (8.8%). Consumers are willing to pay more for these products, perhaps due to their increased popularity and taste.
However, analysts note that meat ranks second among food products on which consumers seek to save money. They show more savings when purchasing meat products than in other categories. This may be due to choosing stores where meat prices are lower, as well as purchasing products at a discount or expiration date. Companies can also offer their own brands of meat products, which may be more affordable to consumers.
So, sales of meat products in Russia continue to grow, with an increased frequency of purchases and an increase in the average price. Meat remains an important category in the consumer basket, and while consumers are looking to save money on this product, they are also willing to pay more for quality options. These trends in meat sales provide opportunities for development and growth in the industry.
