The EU sanctions do not and will not contain any direct restrictions on Russian exports of fertilizers and foodstuffs and any bans on their payment. This was stated on Monday by the head of the EU foreign policy service, Josep Borrell, following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
"Nothing will change in the new package. Our sanctions do not contain any restrictions on trade with Russia in food and fertilizers and no restrictions on their payment. If some players in the market apply sanctions too hard, we explain this to them," he said.
Borrell stressed that, according to the EU, all the world's food problems are only due to the fact that export grain was blocked during the hostilities in Ukraine. He also expressed hope that Russia, Ukraine and Turkey will reach an agreement at the talks in Istanbul on the export of grain from Ukraine by sea.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously stated that the food crisis in the world happened long before the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, including the coronavirus pandemic and the miscalculations of Western countries. At the same time, Lavrov added that the current situation has exacerbated the problem, and Western sanctions have become one of the key reasons for the disruption of food supplies, which exacerbated the crisis.
