Over the past 5 years, the milk productivity of cattle in Russia has increased by 38%. Alexey Voronin, director of the analytical department of the National Union of Milk Producers (Soyuzmoloko), spoke about this at the First Forum of Dairy Industry Leaders.

Such a high increase in productivity is due to a low base, as well as systematic work to improve living conditions for animals, change diets and improve reproduction, he noted.

“Currently, the national average productivity per head is 7.8 tons per year. In large farms it is much higher. At the top of the efficiency rating in terms of productivity is a company with a milk yield of 13 tons per head per year, and the top five is closed by a company with a productivity of 11.5 tons per head. This is almost 2 times higher than the national average,” commented Alexey Voronin.

He added that in the lion's share of Russian regions, milk productivity is at the level of 6.5 tons. Today, 63% of milk is produced in 7% of farms. The largest farms with a livestock of over 6.8 thousand animals show the greatest productivity.

Previously, ViZh experts compiled the top 5 cow breeds based on milk yield. This top includes cows of the Holstein, Ayrshire, black-and-white, Yaroslavl and Kostroma breeds.
