Over the year, the number of unscheduled inspections in the framework of the fight against African swine fever decreased by 22% in the region, says Inessa Chumasova, the head of the department of internal veterinary supervision of the Rosselkhoznadzor in Kaliningrad region. The decline is due to a reduction in the number of companies to be verified.

“Many enterprises have closed down,” said Inessa Chumasova, but could not name the exact number of companies that are currently subject to control over ASF. “From January 1 to December 1 of the current year, 112 inspections were conducted, and last year there were 144,” she said.

In November, according to the press service of the regional administration of Rosselkhoznadzor, 8 out of 27 inspections were carried out as part of work to prevent and eliminate ASF.

This is not about the liquidation of enterprises, but about the suspension of activity, explained deputy president of the Association of meat producers of the Kaliningrad region, Margarita Sarapiy. She also found it difficult to name the number of enterprises that took a pause. “Reorienting production to another type of meat, finding a new niche for economic profit is not easy, so everyone is just waiting to return to their previous job profile, ”she outlined the reasons for the reduction of existing enterprises in the industry.

In the third quarter of 2018, more than 153 thousand pigs died in the region due to the ASF virus.
