Russian meat market in 2022-2023 is characterized by:

Resumption of growth in meat production in Russia

In 2001-2022 There was a steady increase in meat production volumes in the Russian Federation. At the same time, in 2021 there was some stagnation of indicators - the growth rate slowed down noticeably.

Production of meat of all types in 2022, according to updated data from Rosstat, amounted to 11,744.2 thousand tons in slaughter weight, which is 3.5% (398.0 thousand tons) more than in 2021. Including pork production increased by 5.3%, poultry meat - by 4.5%. At the same time, the volume of beef production decreased by 3.2%, lamb and goat meat - by 2.5%, and other types of meat - by 3.3%.

In January-June 2023, when compared with the same period in 2022, the production of meat of all types increased by 2.7% and amounted to 5,583.2 thousand tons in slaughter weight.

In particular, the production of pork increased by 4.7%, poultry meat by 1.5%, beef by 0.8%, lamb and goat meat by 0.4%. Production of other types of meat decreased slightly - by 0.04%.

Reduction in export supplies of meat and meat products in 2022 and their restoration in January-July 2023

2022 Exports of meat and meat products from Russia in 2022, according to AB-Center estimates, decreased in volume by 17.3% (hereinafter - excluding trade with the EAEU countries and Iran). In value terms, the figures, on the contrary, increased slightly - by 4.0%.

The most noticeable decrease in supplies was noted for pork, pork by-products and pork lard. Beef exports fell slightly. At the same time, there was an increase in export supplies of poultry meat.

January-July 2023. In January-July 2023, exports of meat and meat products from Russia increased by 6.9%. At the same time, its cost increased by 0.2%.

The overall increase in export volumes was mainly due to the restoration of pork supplies (pork exports increased by 53.4%) and pork by-products (by 78.8%). At the same time, the volume of shipments of beef (by 12.8%) and poultry meat (by 5.2%) decreased.

In the structure of export supplies of meat and meat products, according to AB-Center estimates, in January-July 2023, the most significant share is occupied by chicken meat - 57.3% and pork - 20.1%. Pork offal accounted for 8.9% of the total supply, beef - 6.3%, turkey meat - 5.4%.

Decrease in import supplies of meat and meat products in 2022, in January-July 2023

2022 Import supplies of meat and meat products to Russia in 2022, according to AB-Center estimates, decreased by 14.7%. At the same time, in value terms, imports, on the contrary, increased by 4.6%.

The reduction in supplies in 2022 was mainly due to a noticeable drop in imports of poultry meat (2.4 times). The supply of lamb, horse meat, pork fat, and pork by-products has also decreased. At the same time, there was an expansion in the import of pork, beef, and beef by-products.

January-July 2023. In January-July 2023, imports of meat and meat products decreased by 1.4%. At the same time, the cost of supplies increased slightly - by 1.9%.

In January-July 2023, supplies of pork and pork by-products decreased noticeably, both in volume and in value terms. At the same time, the volumes of imports of beef, beef by-products and poultry meat increased slightly.
