The Minister of Agriculture of Russia Dmitry Patrushev summed up last year’s performance of the dairy industry and set objectives for the near future at the XII Congress of the National Union of Milk Producers.

In 2020, the agricultural complex performed steadily and achieved positive results, including progress in the dairy sector. According to the Minister, milk production exceeded 32 million tons, 855 thousand more than in 2019. This is the best performance in the last 10 years. The Ministry expects further positive dynamics and estimates that milk production in 2021 will exceed 32.6 million tons. Growth will be primarily driven by introducing innovative animal housing technologies and a highly efficient fodder base, supply of the balance of fodder rations, as well as active use of the genetic potential of dairy herds.

The production of ice cream, cheese, cottage cheese, and butter is projected to increase in 2020. Production of dairy products and milk powder will remain at the 2019 level. The Ministry expects decent performance in 2021 as well.

Milk and dairy producers currently have access to a wide range of support measures, including subsidies, soft loans, grants, and reimbursement of part of capital costs. In 2020, the dairy industry received 28.3 billion roubles in state support. According to Dmitry Patrushev, all current state support measures will be maintained this year. Some mechanisms have been expanded to provide additional support to livestock enterprises and processors.

Another topic addressed at the congress was the gradual introduction of mandatory labelling for dairy products. Apart from maintaining the existing support mechanisms, the Ministry has developed an additional set of measures.

In conclusion, Dmitry Patrushev stressed that the Ministry would continue to provide the dairy industry with all possible support and expects further productive cooperation.
