The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation plans to present a strategy for the development of sheep and goat breeding in the coming years in September, First Deputy Head of the Ministry Dzhambulat Hatuov told reporters on Saturday at the XX All-Russian Exhibition of Breeding Sheep and Goats in Astrakhan.
"Minister of Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev made a task to present a strategy for the development of sheep and goat breeding for the next few years <...> The priority of the strategy will be additional state support for breeding achievements, increasing production, including lamb meat and high-quality wool. We must do everything so that our high-quality products will be popular not only in the domestic market, but also in the external markets", -he said.
After examining the exhibition, Hatuov noted that the regions have a good potential for the export of mutton, however, “mindlessly engaging in the export of mutton is not very correct,” as this may adversely affect the country's food security.
Also, according to the first deputy minister, farmers face the task to increase the supply of quality wool.
The XX All-Russian Exhibition of Breeding Sheep and Goats officially opened on May,25 in Astrakhan. Farmers from 25 regions of Russia and Kazakhstan are participating in it. For the first time, representatives of China came to look at the achievements of Russian livestock breeders. The exhibition presents sheep, goats, as well as horses, camels and buffaloes.
