Veterinary and Life, citing analytical materials from BusinesStat, reports that over the past five years, mutton sales in Russia have decreased by 9.1%, to 117,000 tons. Experts suggest that military-political tensions and the associated economic downturn will negatively affect the results of 2022.
According to the BusinesStat survey, the reduction in the volume of mutton sales in Russia over the past five years is associated with its rise in price by 39.7% against the backdrop of a significant drop in real disposable incomes of the population. A significant role was played by the acceleration of urbanization with negative demographic dynamics. In 2017-2021, sales of this type of red meat have been continuously declining by 1.1-7.1%.
In Russia, the bulk of the sheep population is still accounted for by households located in rural areas. Former residents of villages and villages, who used to buy lamb from their neighbors, after moving to cities, change their consumer preferences and prefer more affordable types of meat - chicken and pork.
Sanctions imposed against Russia will lead to a reduction in exports and imports of mutton (traditionally it was imported from non-CIS countries) Black Sea ports on the territory of Ukraine.
