All news / Oleg Kobyakov: it is too early to predict the end of the food crisis

The food crisis arose long before the special operation in Ukraine, it is too early to predict the timing of its end, Oleg Kobyakov, director of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for communication with the Russian Federation, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“The food crisis did not arise yesterday. Its acute manifestations were felt throughout the planet even before the start of a special military operation in Ukraine. In 2021, 828 million people suffered from chronic hunger in the world - this is 46 million more than a year earlier and almost 150 million more than in the pre-Covid 2019, which we pass off as a starting point," Kobyakov said.

He noted that the aggravation of the situation with food security on the planet is associated both with the consequences of the "covid epidemic" and with "the conflict in Ukraine, other armed conflicts, financial and energy crises, as well as the drought that this season has hit a number of leading countries - food producers."

“It is necessary to take into account this multifactorial nature. Therefore, now hardly anyone will undertake to set the deadlines for achieving such a super-task as overcoming the global food crisis,” Kobyakov added.
