According to the results of the year, pork production in Russia may increase by 5%. This forecast was announced by the General Director of the National Union of Pig Breeders (NSS) Yuri Kovalev. According to Rosstat, in January-March, the production of pigs for slaughter in all farms increased by 4.3% to 1.3 million tons in live weight. The increase in agricultural organizations amounted to 5.8% to 1.2 million tons.
In 2022, the pandemic remains the background, but some of the trends that formed in 2020-2021 are still relevant, Kovalev notes. Among them is increased demand, including for pig products, due to the lack of mass tourism. However, although this demand is higher than in the pre-pandemic period, it is no more than in the past and the year before last. “The only way to avoid a serious price increase in a period of growing demand is to increase production, which is happening now,” the head of the NSS emphasizes.
Miratorg, the largest pork producer in Russia, reported that in the first quarter it increased the output of this meat by 34% to 155 thousand tons. The agricultural holding is implementing a project to double the capacity of its pork division in order to meet the needs of the Russian domestic market in the next few years in pork.
According to Kovalev, now, probably, no sector of the agro-industrial complex feels comfortable, including pig breeding. “The main task of manufacturers is to adapt to new conditions as quickly as possible, to adapt to new options, when you have to sharply increase stocks, even despite prices, you have to choose new logistics routes,” he comments. - At the same time, as the sanctions regime strengthens, new problems may arise - logistics, payment, there may be pressure on foreign companies that were not going to stop working with Russia. However, pig farming in this regard is less dependent on imports than some other industries, and so far it is showing positive dynamics.”
When the first shock breaks in supply chains occurred and some suppliers refused to work with Russian producers, pig farmers managed to solve these problems quite quickly - in a month and a half -, the head of the NSS continues. According to him, now in Russia there is enough feed, veterinary drugs, and feed additives, and this is the main thing. “However, enterprises have to work in a new reality - to buy everything they need at higher prices and work on a 100% prepayment,” emphasizes Kovalev.
